RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday the hiring of Melanie Chandler, who spent last season as the women's soccer head coach at Schreiner University, as the women's soccer assistant coach.

"We are delighted to have Melanie join our staff," UTRGV Women's Soccer Head Coach Mark Foster said. "She brings a lot of experience, including time as a head coach, and she understands the game of soccer in Texas. That will be a big asset in recruiting for the program. Throughout the interview process, we were delighted to see Melanie's philosophy on putting the student-athlete's first and we know she will fit right in. We look forward to working with Melanie as she will have a hand in all aspects of the program."

Chandler joined the staff at Schreiner following the 2021-22 season and was named the head coach on May 5, 2022. Last season, Chandler guided Schreiner to a 6-8-4 record including a 5-5-4 record in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Prior to her time at Schreiner, Chandler spent four seasons (2018-21) at Waldorf University as an assistant coach.

"I am extremely honored to be joining the UTRGV family," Chandler said. "When I had met with Coach Foster and Coach Larson for the first time, I knew instantly this was a program and staff that I wanted to be a part of. Listening to their goals and direction for this program, along with what they value as individuals were all things I believe create a great environment to be successful."

Chandler, a native of Kapolei, Hawaii, played her collegiate career at Waldorf where she appeared in 49 matches over three seasons (2013-15). Throughout her career, Chandler scored eight goals and recorded seven assists.

"I would like to thank Coach Foster, Coach Larson, and the UTRGV Athletic Department for this incredible opportunity," Chandler said. "To join such a University where you can feel the support from everyone is truly humbling. I am definitely looking forward to being a part of something special!"

Chandler earned her bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Colorado Mesa University in 2017 and earned her master's in organizational leadership with a focus in sports management from Waldorf in 2020.

Chandler is certified through the National Sports Performance Association (NSPA) as a speed & agility coach, holds a USSF D License and a USC Level 3 Goalkeeping Diploma.
