Published Oct 11, 2019

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – San Antonio Runners secure a 3-1 victory in the second home game of the season for the Runners in the United Premier Soccer League Central Conference. The Runners improve to (2W-1D-0L) and move to first place in the Heart Division.

The first half was close, with the Runners maintaining possession for the begining of the half. As the game continued, the Coyotes intercepted a pass playing #12, Daniel Lemus, through on a break away to score in the 21st minute. The game heated up with players on both sides being physical and despite the Runners maintaining posession for the rest of the half, halftime ended at 1-0 with the Coyotes ahead.

The second half started off with a bang, the Runners kicked off and increased intensity as more fresh legs were subbed into the match. Within a span of 5 minutes the Runnes scored 3 goals. On a break away Mikey Maldonado was fouled in the box and John Mendoza stepped up to score the first goal for the Runners of the game on a PK in the 76th minute. John Mendoza has scored a PK in all 4 games of the season the Runners have played.

After John's goal, the Runners had several chances blocked by the Coyotes defense but after an assist from John Mendoza, Mikey Maldonado scored another banger from outside the box with a first touch side volley. Quickly after the Coyotes' kickoff the Runners won the ball and John Mendoza played it wide for Bryan Flores to take on the Coyotes' keeper 1 v 1, scoring in the 80th minute.

It all happened so fast and in the heat of the moment a scuffle broke out resulted in Coyotes player #11 Drik Gerhardt ejected from the game with a red card and blood dripping down his face.

After the fouls and cards the intensity of the game died down for the last 10 minutes but that didn't stop the Coyotes from trying. Goalkeeper Kyle Miller finished the game with 1 save.

The Runners play this Saturday at the University of Texas at San Antonio's Campus Recreation Field Complex - South starting at 8:00pm, against Alamo City SC for UPSL regular season standing. Watch live on Facebook and YouTube at @sarunnerssc
