UPSL Announces Michigan Expansion with Wayne County Sporting

Wayne County (Mich.)-Based Pro Development Club Will Join Midwest Conference
Published Nov 15, 2019

November 14, 2019 – Los Angeles – The United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) is excited to announce Wayne County Sporting as a new member kicking off with the 2020 Spring Season.

Based in the most populous county in the State of Michigan, Wayne County Sporting will begin UPSL play in the Midwest Conference East Division, and host its home games at Gabriel Richard Catholic High School (15325 Pennsylvania Road, Riverview, MI 48193) in compliance with UPSL's National Standards.

United Premier Soccer League Michigan Manager Robert Brinkman said, "Wayne County Sporting is a club that's developing its youth side of things to grow into the adult side. One of the more dedicated owners and coaches out there, Eric Perilla will bring in players from Wayne County to represent Wayne County. However, don't be surprised to see a player or two sprinkled into his squad from somewhere around the globe to enhance the talent pool the state and make soccer better here for everyone. It will be a pleasure to work with Eric and help Wayne County Sporting succeed, and we wish he and his wife, Leslie, success as the club prepares for the 2020 Spring Season."

Eric Perilla is Owner and Head Coach of Wayne County Sporting. A native of Dearborn (Mich.), Perilla played and trialed professionally with teams in Argentina, Mexico, Italy, England and Sweden, before returning to the United States and serving as a player, coach, and advisor for Miami United FC (NPSL).

Wayne County Sporting Owner Eric Perilla said, "The UPSL has always been something that I've been ambitious about. The UPSL just makes the most sense to us because the structure is there, the people are in place, and the league goes all year-round. We're not a summer-league program. We've got guys who can go all year round, that are ready to go all year round, and our club reflects that. Our facility at Gabriel Richard Catholic High School allows us to use the ability to train every single day, be it under the lights in the stadium, in the gym, using weights, or having access to the media center for film study. Wayne County Sporting is dedicated to developing professional soccer player with the opportunity to treat them as such. We're extremely excited to join the UPSL and ready to get started!"

Perilla also played for Chicago Fire (MLS) Reserves, and has spent several years coaching in and around the United States Development Academy before starting Wayne County Sporting.

"I feel like there's a need, and there's a want and a desire for it, and by giving our players and opportunity to play at this level nationally, it's going to make things a lot easier to send players to various levels and clubs around the world, or even to cut up their film so they can work on getting that first professional contract," Perilla said.

Leslie Perilla is the General Manager of Wayne County Sporting. Perilla played collegiately at Miami Gardens (Fla.)'s Florida Memorial University (NCAA), and most recently in a number of exhibition matches with Miami United FC women's team.

Wayne County Sporting completed its second season in the Michigan Premier Soccer League (MPSL), and participated for the first time in Open Qualifying for the 2020 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Wayne County Sporting youth academy features recreational and competitive programs for boys and girls of all ages, servicing more than 150 of players from the county's 40-plus communities.

Wayne County Sporting will announce tryouts and its upcoming game schedule.
